Abstract

Introduction: Livestock production in Latin America faces significant challenges, particularly in optimizing animal feeding. The search for alternatives to corn (Zea mays) to improve sustainability and profitability has led to the study of sweet potato silage (Ipomoea batata) as a potential substitute. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the impact of substituting corn with sweet potato hay in the rations of dairy cows, analyzing its effects on productivity and sustainability in small-scale farming units. Methodology: A randomized block design was utilized, assigning three treatments with different proportions of sweet potato hay. Key variables, such as dry matter intake, milk production, weight gain, and costs, were assessed using ANOVA to identify significant differences.  Results: The results showed homogeneity in animal performance across treatments, with no significant differences in metrics. However, treatments with higher inclusion of sweet potato silage demonstrated competitive net incomes and good milk production, highlighting the economic viability of this alternative. Conclusion: Including sweet potato silage in dairy rations is a promising option that can enhance the sustainability and profitability of farms, promoting the use of local resources and strengthening food security in the region.
